Character Creation

How you create your character and who that character is affects everything about your D&D experience. Ultimately, your character creation is up to you and your Dungeon Master. What follows are the Elderbourne Chronicles' expectations for characters at our tables.

If you're new to D&D and don't know how to create a character, join one of our Character Creation workshops.

One Shots

  • The character level is determined by the one shot.

  • Your character’s species, class, subclass, and background must come from the 5th Edition Players Handbook (PHB). Whether the 2014 or 2024 ruleset is used if determined by the one shot.

  • Abilities must be chosen from the Standard Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

  • New characters have the starting equipment outlined in the PHB as well as the following magical items* . . .

    • Levels 1-2: 1 common consumable (potion or scroll)

    • Levels 3-4: 1 common consumable and 1 common

    • Levels 5-6: 1 common consumable, 1 common, and 1 uncommon

    • Levels 7-8: 1 uncommon consumable, 1 common, and 1 uncommon

    • Levels 9-10: 1 uncommon consumable, 1 common, 2 uncommon

    • Levels 11-12: 1 uncommon consumable, 1 common, 2 uncommon, 1 rare

    • Levels 13-14: 1 rare consumable, 1 common, 2 uncommon, 1 rare

    • Levels 15-16: 1 rare consumable, 1 common, 2 uncommon, 1 rare, 1 very rare

    • Levels 17-18: 1 very rare consumable, 1 common, 2 uncommon, 2 rare, 1 very rare

    • Levels 19-20: 1 very rare consumable, 1 common, 2 uncommon, 2 rare, 2 very rare, 1 legendary

  • Characters that have been used in other one shots may retain the items and treasures they have collected. Keep in mind, though, that one shots are the perfect place to experiment with different races and classes.

  • Multiclassing is allowed. The only restrictions are the ability restrictions for the class in the multiclassing rules in the PHB.

  • Characters may be created using https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/premade.

  • *Characters can only be attuned to 3 magical items at a time.

Traditional Campaigns

  • Each campaign will have a Session 0 where all the players and the DM can craft the best characters for the adventure.

  • Depending on the campaign and the players, there can be great flexibility in character builds. However, the Dungeon Master will be the final determiner of what will be allowed a the table.

West Marches Campaigns

  • New characters start at Level 3. The chart below shows how level progression works. If you had a pre-generated character for the first game, you are allowed to transfer your rewards, gold, items and checkpoints over to a custom character up to level 4.

  • Your character’s race, class, subclass, and background must come from the 5th Edition Players Handbook (PHB). Additional races, classes, subclasses, and backgrounds will be unlocked as the campaign progresses.

  • Abilities must be chosen from the Standard Array: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8

  • Hit Points are maximum for your class for your first level. Every level after adds the average HP for your class.

  • You can either take the starting equipment as described in the PHB or you can take the total gold each item costs. You may then use that gold to purchase whatever you want from the tables in the PHB. Substituting an identically priced item is also allowed.

  • Multiclassing is allowed. The only restrictions are the ability restrictions for the class in the multiclassing rules in the PHB.

  • The maximum level for all characters is 12. When your character reaches level 12, they retire, and you must create a new character following all previous rules. Equipment, gold, and special items do not carry over to the new character.

Gaining Levels in our West Marches Campaign
